How People with Allergic Tendencies Can ProtectThemselves During the Pollen Season

For people who are prone to allergies, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) considers that there may be anunderlying condition known as “latent pathogens” (Fu Xie) within the body. In this view, an allergen itselfmay simply act as a trigger rather than being the only underlying cause of an allergic reaction.

Therefore, the most important approach is to strengthen and restore the body's underlying constitutionwhile reducing exposure to allergens.

1. Exercise Regularly to Strengthen the Body

One important way to support and improve the body's constitution is through appropriate and consistentexercise.

Regular physical activity can help improve overall physical strength and support the body's naturaldefenses. The goal is not excessive exercise, but rather choosing an appropriate form and intensity ofexercise that can be maintained consistently.

2. Pay Attention to Nutrition and Dietary Support

A balanced and appropriate diet is another important part of maintaining a healthy constitution.

TCM emphasizes that food can be used as part of daily health maintenance. Simple dietary therapies thatare appropriate for an individual's constitution can be incorporated into everyday meals and routines.

During allergy season, it may also be beneficial to strictly limit or avoid added sugars, particularly forindividuals who notice that certain foods or dietary habits seem to aggravate their symptoms.

3. Consider Preventive Treatment Before Symptoms Become Severe

Another important approach is preventive care.

For conditions such as allergic asthma or allergic rhinitis, it is better not to wait until symptoms becomesevere before seeking treatment. From a TCM perspective, preventive treatment may begin before orduring the early stages of allergy season, depending on the individual's constitution and symptoms.

A qualified TCM practitioner may use individualized herbal medicine, acupuncture, or tuina (Chinesetherapeutic massage) as part of a preventive or supportive treatment plan.

The specific approach should be determined according to each person's individual constitution and healthneeds.

4. Protect Yourself from Pollen and Airborne Allergens

Perhaps the most important and practical step during allergy season is to reduce exposure to allergens.

When pollen, cottonwood fluff, or other airborne particles are present, wearing a well-fitting mask can helpreduce the amount of airborne material that is inhaled.

If you are particularly sensitive during allergy season, consider wearing a mask when spending timeoutdoors, especially on days when pollen or airborne particles are especially noticeable.

A Comprehensive Approach

From a TCM perspective, managing seasonal allergies is not simply about avoiding one particular allergen. It is about addressing both the underlying constitution of the individual and exposure toenvironmental triggers.

Regular exercise, appropriate dietary habits, preventive care, and practical protection from airborneallergens can all be part of a comprehensive approach to supporting the body during allergy season.
